SCCM with SoftGrid 4.5

So, one of these I gave a presentation about Softgrid in an MDOP session, and one of the presents asked me the following question:

"So, if we have an Administrator's console to enable the streaming of the applications to the clients, why do we need SCCM 2007 (former SMS)?"

Obviously, I knew that Softgrid would have an integration with SCCM, but I didn't know what kind. But after doing some research, I found that this integration is arriving in the summer of 2008 and has some of the following features:

· Distribution Points are enabled to stream virtual applications to clients

· SCCM clients are configured to interact with the SoftGrid client to evaluate policy

· SCCM administrators use the SCCM Administrator Console to create virtual application packages and send them to distribution points

· SCCM Advertisements are used to deliver applications to clients

Hopefully the amount of features will increase, but after seeing these features, my question is... why are needing now the Softgrid's console if we have SCCM?

Windows Live Mesh

Live Mesh

A few days ago, I got to know about the preview of a product that hopefully will revolutionize the future of computing: Live Mesh!

Imagine a world where you can access your computers(PCs, Macs…) , cellphones, PDAs, etc. from anywhere you may be. Sharing and syncronizing folders, files and access your desktop and even your applications. So Live Mesh is that and so much more. Some of the things that have been said, is that they include the app's instalation at the same time to all the computers and devices from the web!

Are you interested? Watch it now on:

Softrid OSD Editor and Migration Tools

As seen here the team from Login Consultants released a new version of their OSD editor and Softgrid Migration Tools to support Microsoft Application Virtualization 4.5. There's a brief overview lifted from there website and a download link below.

Login Consultants releases updated versions of the SoftGrid OSD Editor and SoftGrid Migration Tool to support the upcoming version of Microsoft Application Virtualization 4.5 (formerly SoftGrid) which is now still in beta.

New in the SoftGrid OSD Editor 2.1, besides some minor fixes, is the ability to support and manage Dynamic Suiting Composition in OSD files. This is a new feature of SoftGrid 4.5 which allows interaction between different virtualized applications which run in their own “sandboxed” environment. The SoftGrid Migration Tool (SGMT) 1.1 has also been updated to work with SoftGrid 4.5. This version of the SGMT also supports new features of the latest SoftGrid Sequencer version, like the ability to set type of Compression, Block Size and save a Virtual Application in Microsoft Installer (MSI) format.

The SoftGrid OSD Editor 2.1 and the SoftGrid Migration Tool 1.1 can be downloaded through our downloads section.

Microsoft ClearFlow

Microsoft developed a free web application that it allows to define transit routes based on crossing of some information, helping the drivers to run away from the areas with more movement.

The ClearFlow service was developed in the last five years by specialized investigators of Microsoft in artificial intelligence and it is based on the adaptation of techniques of learning for machines. The goal is to use some types of information that can influence flowing of the transit to identify alternative passages. This method allows in such a way to access more necessary routes in highways as in ways in the cities.

The application goes to be available in maps.Live.com vestibule and will cover initially 72 cities of U.S.A. Let's see when it comes to Portugal.

For more information it reads this article of New York Times.

The local policy of this system does not permit you to logon interactively??

In Windows 2000 (and Windows Server 2003) servers that are configured as Domain Controllers only 5 groups have the right to log on locally on the computer. Those groups are:

Administrators, Account, Print, Backup, and Server Operators.

Without this right any user who will try to log on locally will receive this message:

(The local policy of this system does not permit you to log-on interactively)

To give a specific user or group the right to log on locally on the DC you must edit the Domain Controller GPO (or create another one and link it to the Domain Controllers OU in Active Directory Users and Computers). Most novice IT personnel find it harder to add user rights on W2K than in Windows NT 4. I agree, but life goes on, doesn't it?

To make life easier run this command and you won't have to edit the GPO:

ntrights -u Users +r SeInteractiveLogonRight

You must have the NTRIGHTS.EXE program from the W2K Resource kit (or d/l it from HERE).

(You can substitue USERS with the name of the user or group you want to configure).

If you still want to do it via the GPO, do the following:

  1. Go to Start, Settings, Control Panel, Administrative Settings.

  2. Double-click Domain Controller Security Policy.

  3. Go to Security Settings, Local Policies, User Rights.

  1. Double-click Logon Locally on the right pane.

  2. Click Add, Browse, and double click the user or group you want to add.

  1. Click Ok all the way out.

  2. Reboot your computer, or even better, use SECEDIT:

secedit /refreshpolicy machine_policy /enforce

By the way, in Windows Server 2003 the same user right is called "Allow Logon Locally", and to refresh the policy you need to run a different command:

gpupdate /force

Approved OOXML As Norm ISO

The International Organization for the Normalization approved the norm for structured documents proposal for Microsoft as norm ISO. The document of the account of the definitive voting of the proposal to circulate is it in the Internet, either even so not yet official.

According to given available the OpenXML percent of the national members with representation in committee composed for the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and Comissão Electrotécnica Internacional will have congregated 86 the favorable votes of (IEC).
So that it was approved with international norm the OpenXML would have to more than collect 75 the favorable votes of percent of the voters, in a voting that of the one for finished a long and controversial process during which the community open source looked for to sensibly the international community for the arguments of not.

The International Organization of Normalization already had recognized as norm ISO ODF (OpenDocumentFormat). In the perspective of this chain one second norm for the same type of documents would bring confusion to the market. On the other hand, the community open source came defending that the OpenXML total is not opened, what it would become difficult the development of applications for third. The accusations have been refused for the Microsoft that during the process finished for having to review some characteristics of the norm proposal, giving answers the questions raised in a first voting.

Microsoft Application Virtualization (SoftGrid) Post Installation Tasks

Some things to do when finishing installing Softgrid.

  • Verify that the SQL Server Service is started and set to Automatic
  • Verify that the SoftGrid Virtual Application Server Service is started and set to Automatic
  • Share the content folder giving at least read permissions to Everyone. If you need to change these settings for security purposes please make sure that the System account has at least read permissions to the content folder and share
  • Set the Default Content Path in the System Options within the management console. Make sure you type the UNC path to the content folder
  • Verify in the Default Provider that under the group Assignment you have the group(s) that you want to publish applications to
  • Verify in IIS that the installation created the SoftGrid Management virtual pool
  • Verify the Credentials for the account specified to browse the Directory. This is located in the Account Authorities section.

As long as you keep these things in mind your journey with Microsoft Application Virtual should be smooth sailing.
